First Light

This is a letters patent, so called from the Latin verb pateo, to lie open, exposed, accessible. The originator’s seal was attached pendent from the document, so that it did not have to be broken in order for the document to be read. Susie Freeman brought us a few more pieces of work, just in time for Christmas. This one is already gift wrapped. Is the yellow ribbon significant? Is it part of the artwork? Not really. Susie opened the frame to swap its contents then couldn’t close it securely, so she tied it together. I like it. Maybe we should adopt this method of framing. Continue reading “Gift Wrapped”

Blending In. The chameleon is presented larger than life and partially visible through layers of torn paper. Inspiration came from a bill posting site near my home in Oxford. Jelly Green came to visit us last week with a new herd of paintings. They include a group of Charolais cattle energetically rearing and stretching their necks, a Hereford in profile and a lovely portrait of a Jersey cow painted with all of Jelly’s distinctive enthusiasm and vitality.
