Triptychs

001

This is Pink Dark Triptych, 2011, oil on linen by Sean Scully, a donation to the Pallant House Gallery Collection and the catalyst for their recent exhibition, Sean Scully: Triptychs. It sounded like a great show, I was looking forward to seeing it, but I wasn’t quick enough and now it’s closed. I was disappointed to miss it so here’s my own compilation of Scully triplets and trinities and trios.

  1. I was lucky enough to see the exhibition just before it finished. The paintings ranged from 1986 until last year. It was one of the most beautiful shows I have seen in a long time. The elegance and balance of every painting, print and drawing shone through. I particularly loved the 12 small paintings on copper. They seemed to move from high impact colour to neutral tones seamlessly like the colours in the landscape throughout the year. I don’t know if I read the series correctly, but they left their mark. Pallant House is a wonderful space, and the curatorship is second to none. I loved the Keith Vaughan exhibition last year, and have made some soft ground etchings as a result of the Gwen John and Celia Paul exhibition which I saw a while ago. It is well worth a visit if you can get down to Chichester, and the bookshop, frankly is to die for. Thank you for the blog entry Chris.
