I’ve been listening to Nashville Obsolete, the new album by Dave Rawlings Machine. It begins with The Weekend and it’s accompanying video documents a weekend roadtrip by Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch from Nashville to California. It got me looking around for more.
Dave Rawlings Machine is comprised of Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch on vocals and guitars, Willie Watson on guitar and Paul Kowert on double bass. In this video, shot by a fan in the audience at The Warfield in San Francisco, they’re helped out by Brittany Haas on fiddle as they perform a great version of The Band’s classic song, The Weight.
Here they’re joined by John Paul Jones on mandolin at the Georgia Theatre in Athens, Georgia for another version of the same song. You can’t have too much of The Weight.
I think this one was recorded back stage at the same venue, a song by John Paul Jones’s old band Led Zeppelin called Going To California, it features sweet finger picking and some sweet shared harmony.
