We are very pleased to welcome Tory Lawrence to The Rowley Gallery. Five of her oil paintings are presently displayed in our window. They are captivating pictures of the countryside, direct responses to being there, walking, soaking it up. The surface of the paintings is lively and worked but never overwrought. You can smell the oil paint mixed with the smell of the fields. They feel authentic; it’s clear she has looked and absorbed and distilled a true vision.
Tory Lawrence celebrates the fact that landscape painting comes from within, and is not simply a record of external appearances. As Constable pointed out, ‘painting is but another word for feeling’. – Andrew Lambirth
More details of these oil paintings can be found at The Rowley Gallery and there is an exhibition of watercolours, Dedham Vale & River Birds: New Paintings By Tory Lawrence at The Boat House Gallery, Flatford Mill from 7th September until 3rd November – National Trust: Flatford
