We left the main road at Cross in Hand then down the back lanes to Chiddingly, an enchanting drive through the woods, alternately dappled with jewelled light sparkling through the leaves or dark and gloomy in sunken, narrow holloways, and always the threat of encountering oncoming traffic around the next bend of the single track road. Recent Etchings

I learned how to do etching from Bartolomeu dos Santos when I was a student at the Slade School of Fine Art in the late 1970’s. After I had graduated, no longer having easy access to a print room and a shortage of funds meant I had to improvise equipment in order to carry on printmaking. I developed my own way of applying aquatint and a converted mangle gave me rough working proofs for a couple of years. The search for part time teaching work took me to the Northeast of England, where I immediately became a member of Charlotte Press in Newcastle. There I had open access to a well-equipped print room and could further develop my technique and produce editions. Continue reading “Recent Etchings”

The Moo Man

The story of a maverick dairy farmer and his unruly cows, filmed over four years on the marshes of the Pevensey Levels. Cows are happiest out in the fields eating grass. However in winter there is no grass and their hooves plough up the wet fields so much that they must come indoors, to be looked after for the winter. But once Spring arrives and the days lengthen, the smell of fresh grass wafts in the air, and the cows shout and whine for the great outdoors. We arrived at the village of Stoughton in a remote valley of the South Downs via a single track road from the north. It felt like we were coming to the back of beyond.
